ObjectiveRecognize that most plants and animals require food and
oxygen (needed to release the energy from that food) Recognize the function of the chloroplast of photosynthesis Recognize photosynthesis is achemical change with reactants (water and carbon dioxide) and products (energy rich sugar molecules and oxygen) that takes place in the presence of light and chlorophyll |
ActivitiesBegin this unit with a discussion of the Mysterious Everything. Group students and have each group evaluate the passage. After they have discussed the passage, have each group create a quality question for the wiki. The quality question should address the information within the passage. Students can select any idea which expands on the knowledge gained through reading the passage.
Students will access the wiki and evaluate the quality questions from the other groups. As a class discussion, we will consider the questions based on the criteria we established for a quality question. Students will ask questions of the other groups pertaining to the meaning of the question and then discuss their evaluations. Students will then be asked to respond to questions about the passage posted on the wiki. Assessment: Wiki questions about passage Have students create an Animoto video about the information within the passage. Using the Mysterious Everything Activity Guide, explain how this video will address the many questions that can be raised about the subject. Students will complete a Written Text action plan about the topics and possible images in which the video will be built. Assessment: Written Text Scoring Guide Project Assessment: Mysterious Everything Animoto Scoring Guide Discuss the Flow of Energy within plants and animals. Enhance the discussion of the ways in which animals obtain the necessary energy to sustain their life by using the slides from Eating Habits of Animals to discuss herbivores, carnivores and omnivories. Create three questions about the differences in size, digestion and body design between herbivores and carnivores. Have students respond to three separate questions and have class discussion after completion of each question. Begin reviewing background information about cells using the Cells powerpoint. Slides will emphasize the keys cell parts and the basic difference between plant and animal cells. Cell Model Project. View Plant Video to view the importance of plants to our survival. Have students respond to the Plant Video Questions addressing information covered in this three minute film. Assessment: Grade video questions Use interactive Plant Cell and Chloroplast structure to discuss the role of chloroplast. Also use a cross section animation of a leaf. View the Bill Nye video about chloroplast and the humorous version of Le Chlorplaste' also view Chloroplast, the source of life View the Photosynthesis animation website and discuss the process. Next, view the Brain POP photosynthesis video and use the interactive features of the website to enhance the information. Reinforce the reactants and products of this process by looking at the Photoequation View the animation Photosynthesis, pause the video and discuss various points within the video. Once completed, then take the interactive quiz Using the Energy Cycle diagram, have students analyze each part within a wiki post. Students will need to explain what is occuring at each step of the cycle. In preparation for our final project, we will take a look at Photosynthesis cartoon Photosynthesis song. |
