Article Review Template
In order to help with the article review assignment, I have created a format or template to use in structuring your
document. With the aid of the scoring guide, this template will allow you to piece together a quality summary
of your selected article.
To begin with you should open a word document. This will allow you to copy and paste information and help organization this information into its proper paragraph. Each article review should have a minimum of four paragraphs. The formats for each paragraph are as follows:
In this paragraph you should state which article you are summarizing and the author of the article.
Next, read the summary for the article on the main article page. (The page you are directed to after you click on this weeks articles). Read this summary and find out the main ideas within the paragraph. Restate this summary using your own
words to be the body of the 1st paragraph.
2nd and 3rd and maybe 4th paragraph
These paragraphs must address the main ideas of the article. Read the article and highlight or copy the ideas which “stick out” as important. Narrow down these ideas into two or three main ideas. After you copy and paste these ideas into a document, create spacing between each of the ideas. Then, within these spaces look for facts, quotes and/or examples which will help support the ideas. Once this is completed you should have the structure for each of these paragraphs. Now all you have to do is write a few sentences to connect the main idea to the supporting information and the paragraph is complete!
In this paragraph you should explain why you chose this article. Then, give your opinion as to what you feel you learned from this article. Also, express how the information in the article changed or added to your knowledge about the subject.
Finally, how will this knowledge help with having a better understanding of this subject in the future?

Article reviews allow students to read non-fiction science based articles and then write a four to five paragraph summary of their findings. These articles are designed to improve student reading comprehension and writing skills. Articles will be accessed from my "Mr Thornhill's News" within the DoGoNews website. We will use an article selection process which assures no two articles will be reviewed within the same grade level. We will make every effort to allow the student to choose from a variety of scientific topics.
Below are two documents which will help students gain knowledge and have success with this activity. One of the documents is a template as to how the article review should be structured. The other document is the scoring guide as to how these articles will be assessed.
