Yesterday Touch Screen
If Jiake Liu had everything his way, touch screens would be replace by much cooler stuff. GAUNTLET is a smart glove that turns one’s hand into a keyboard. It is fitted with wireless keyboard functionality, so when the user type his message, a wire transmits it to a small box control unit.
In order to create this simple device, a team had to assigned the easiest and most natural hand movement to the most common letters.
“Alphabet letters that are not so frequently use as well as function” and it is even cooler when the user memorized where the letters are at, it will become easier to use.
Jiake hope this would be use to help people with disabilities.

I read the article about 2012’s only solar eclipse. It was written by Meera Dolasia on November 11. It talks about when and where the solar eclipse will be.
On November 14, 2012 a small part of the Southern Hemisphere will see a total solar eclipse. The total solar eclipse will be seeable in Kakadu National Park and Cairns in Australia. Solar eclipses are coveted because they only cover a small area and very rarely are in the same area.
Eclipses last only for a very short time period of time. The longest eclipse is seven and a half minutes. The eclipse is also very good for scientists to conduct experiments and study them.
This was a very good article. Solar eclipses are very rare and not a lot of people get to see them.

The name of the article I’m writing about is “The Competition For Title Of ‘World’s Smallest Dog’ Heats Up!” The article is by Meera Dolasia. This article is about the worlds smallest dog and what dog is going to win or has won in the past. Beyonce is a female Dachshund mix that weighed barely an ounce when she was born.
The owner of Beyonce sent an application with a picture of the female Dachshund to the Guinness Book of World Records. The officials of the book wouldn’t even consider it until the dog turned one because that is when a dog is supposed to be full grown. Beyonce is not expected to be over 1.5 pounds. When she was born she was so small she could fit on a spoon! Another possible contender would be a Puerto Rican Chihuahua named Milly. Milly is a few months older than Beyonce but when she was born she had to be fed with an eye dropper. When Milly was three months the Puerto Rican Chihuahua had only grown three inches tall!
Those weren’t the only two that were possible contenders. In July of 2012 came a even smaller dog than Beyonce and Milly. The dogs name is Meysi and only weighed 1.58 pounds when she was born. Meysi was so small her owner fed her with a syringe every half hour day and night! The last dogs name is Boo Boo. Boo Boo is the current worlds smallest dog. She is a six year old Chihuahua who barely weighs 1.5 pounds. Boo Boo is only four inches tall!
I chose this article because it looked interesting. Also it was about little dogs and I like dogs. This article was mostly about three little dogs who were contenders to be the next worlds smallest dog. They first have to beat Boo Boo which is the current worlds smallest dog. This article was very interesting and the dogs were very cute. I didn’t know a dog could be so small. So that added to my knowledge.

I read The Competition for Title Of 'World's Smallest Dog' Heats Up! By Meera Dolasia on November 9, 2012. The puppies are so cut.

The Guinness book of world records has the ad for this cut article.

The smallest one had to be fed with an eyedropper. At three months it had only grown three inches tall.

In concern it has not been decide who the smallest dog in the world is.

2012’s Only Total Solar Eclipse
I read the article, ‘Astronomy Fans Get Ready For 2012’s Only Total Solar Eclipse’, by Meera Dolasia. It is about the only solar eclipse of the year. On November 14th, 2012, the only solar eclipse of the year will be seen by only a narrow part of the Southern Hemisphere. Parts of Australia, the South Pacific, and a very small area off the coast of Chile will be able to see it.
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, so the sun is totally or kind of covered. Solar eclipses only occur during the full moon. Total eclipses are deemed safe, but partial eclipses are not. The intense infrared and ultraviolet radiation can cause permanent eye damage, so protective eyewear is advised.
These eclipses are not rare, but they cover only very narrow corridors of the Earth and aren’t seen often in the same place. North America’s last total eclipse was on August 1st, 2008 and we won’t get another one until about August 21st, 2017. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to see the partial eclipse here in North America either.
When these eclipses occur, they don’t last very long. The longest known time for a total solar eclipse was a seven and a half minutes. While in Cairns, the eclipse will last about two hours, but the total block out of the sun will only last about two minutes! That’s not that long. The total time for the eclipse will have to be savored because it won’t last long!

Mickey Mouse and Darth Vader, Together?

This passage I am writing my article review on was written by Meera Dolasia. The passage she wrote is called “Why Darth Vader And Mickey Mouse May Soon Become Best Of Pals!” If you haven’t guessed this passage is about Disney, but what about dianey. If you want to know why you have to keep reading this article review.

Most people think that Disney is just associated with the princesses and Mickey Mouse, which many teens don’t want to watch ( I must say that teens that don’t want to watch Disney classics are CRAZY!!!). Over the years though Disney has changed alot! Since 2006 Disney has bought Pixar Inc., and Marvel Entertainment, the studios that made a lot of your favorite movies. Like Ratatouille, WALL-E, Ironman, Spiderman, and Avengers! Now Disney has bought one more movie studio to add to the family.

That movie studio is Lucasfilm, the studio where many classics have been made. Classic movies like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and Jaws. It cost Disney $4.05 billion dollars to buy Lucasfilm. Disney now has full rights over the movies, franchise, and games put out by Lucasfilms. Disney does plan to restart one of the most popular movies ever! That movies is Star Wars, which made Lucas films $4.4 billion dollars just in ticket sales!

They are now going to make a Star Wars 7, but no worries no Disney characters will be added into the movie. Some people are happy about a new movie out, others not so much. I personally love Disney and believe that they wont mess this movie up. Besides Disney has a reputation of keeping their companies independent so they can do what they do best. Thank you for reading my article review and good bye!

An elephant that speaks korean?
Elephants have been known to do many things such as; paint calculate math problems, wash cars, and even imitate sounds. Koshik an elephant in a zoo in South Korea has learned how to speak korean language. He can say hello, good, no sit down, and lie down. I think that it is amazing that an elephant has learned how to speak. They think that Koshik wanted to learn how to socialize since he was the only elephant in the zoo.

I read the article about Disney bought Lucas Films by Meera Dolasia. On October 30th Disney announced that they had bought Lucas Films, the makers of Jaws, Indiana Jones, and the all mighty Star Wars. Lucas Films was bought for 4.05 billion dollars! Are the Mickey Mouse gang and the Star Wars gang gonna star together in a movie?
By buying Lucas Films Disney has the right to continue franchises such as Star Wars or Indiana Jones. They also now have the right to make Star Wars books or any other merchandise. Disney also now owns Skywalker Sounds, an audio sound effect company that made sounds for movies such as Titanic.
Disney has already started working on Star Wars 7, which will be coming out in 2015 sometime. Disney also owns Pixar since 2006, making Disney one of the most money making companies in the world. The question on everybodies mind is if Disney will ruin the Star Wars franchise or make it better.
I am excited to see if Star Wars 7 will be like its predessors or just stink! So for all you Star Wars fans, I encourage you to turn on your computer and take a look at this article. MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!!!

Scientists Create Transparent Soil To 'Spy' On Plants!
For many years, scientists have been trying to unravel the mystery of what really goes on in plants in the parts that are not visible to us - That is, around the roots that lie underground hidden by dense soil. Now, thanks to researchers from Scotland's University of Abertay Dundee, they may finally be able to solve this mystery that is as old as the Universe itself! The breakthrough made by a team led by Lionel Dupuy at the University's research lab - The James Hutton Institute, is the creation of a synthetic soil, as clear as glass. The transparent dirt that took two years to develop is made from a composite of Naflon, a material currently used in fuel cells, batteries and a wide range of other devices. it also seems to be able to replicate the soil chemistry that allows plants to thrive.
While Naflon itself is naturally transparent, to make it crystal clear so that everything that happens around can be observed, the scientists mixed it with a proprietary water-based solution. In order to mimic the soil particles so that they are able to form channels and retain water and nutrients, the scientists shaped the Naflon into little pellets. This transparent soil is causing a lot of buzz because of the impact it will have on everything pertaining to plants - From studying crop genetics to plant diseases and even, contamination. In fact, Dupuy and his colleagues have already used the soil to analyze how some deadly strains of E.coli bacteria interact with lettuce roots.
In order to do so they created a modified version of the bacteria with the help of a fluorescent green protein extracted from jellyfish. This fluorescence together with the clear soil helped them observe with unprecedented clarity how the bacteria formed colonies around the root and contaminated the entire plant - Once they completely understand how this happens, researchers will be able to find ways to stop the transfer of this deadly bacteria from entering our fresh produce like lettuce and strawberries! Being able to observe the way roots absorb nutrients, could also help scientists develop crops with better root systems so that the plants do not need as many fertilizers. The next challenge for the researchers is to figure out a cost effective way to produce the transparent soil so that it can be duplicated by scientists all over the world, and used for various research projects - All resulting in us having healthier plants and vegetables.

Transparent Soil
I am summarizing the article, Scientists Create Transparent Soil To ‘Spy’ On Plants! The author of this article is Meera Dolasia. The main idea is that now we can see how plants grow and help prevent bacteria and diseases on plants.
The soil is made of a synthetic soil, like glass, also contain a composite of Naflon, a material used in fuel cells, batteries and other things. Scientists can now study crop genetics, contamination, and have already seen how deadly E.coli bacteria react to lettuce roots.
The next things scientists want to figure out is a way to produce the transparent soil so that they can recreate it and use it for other research projects, hopefully making fresher and healthier plants and vegetables.
I chose this article because transparent soil looked pretty cool, and my dad is a farmer. I learned about how this has helped with plants to provide better plants and vegetables for humans. This will help me in the future, so that if they do recreate this and sell it, I could help my dad.

Solar eclipse of 2012
This article is about the solar eclipse that will be taken place this year. This article was written by Meera Dolasia on November 11, 2012. On November 14th, 2012, a very narrow corridor of the Southern Hemisphere will be treated to a special event - The only total solar eclipse of 2012. The complete blockage of the sun will only be seen from Kakadu National Park and Cairns in Australia, parts of the South Pacific and a small area off the coast of Chile.
Not a lot of people have ever been in a total eclipse, this happens because the way the way you are positioned. Not a lot of people are going to see the eclipse this year either. An interesting fact is when this happens in an area it usually never happens in that area again.
So, while for the residents of Cairns the eclipse will take place from 5.45 am to 7.40 am local time, the total obscurement of the sun will last for just two minutes. Also, there is a slight possibility that thanks to an incoming tropical storm some areas may not be able to enjoy the beauty of this rare event
I chose this article because it looked interesting. I learned a lot from this article, that things like this usually aren’t witnessed by very many people. this is a rare thing to see.

Elephant speaks Korean????
I am summarizing an article about an elephant who can speak Korean. This article was published by Meera Dolasia on November 4th, 2012. (Elephants are known to do many things. Paint, calculate, math problems, and etc.) This is the first time ever for it to be possible that an elephant can speak a language.
(Mammals the size of elephants can’t use their lips make sounds like humans.) Their upper lips and noses are formed together to form their trunks. (Koshik, a pachyderm that lives at the Everland Zoo in South Korea seems to have learnt the Korean language.) Koshik can say up to five words in Korean. (Koshik does it somehow by moving his trunk inside his throat.
(Scientists believe that the Koshik’s adoption of the Kotean language can be explained by the fact that when he was brought to the zoo, he was the only elephant there. I find this article very interesting because I’m interested about animals and I might want to work at a vet when I’m older. This can help scientist get other animals to speak languages. This is a great discovery because it was impossible until now.

Tiny Pup
The competition for the world’s smallest dog heats up!! Lots of dogs are more than tiny enough to be the smallest dog in the world. There are some pretty small dogs out there, but the second smallest or 3rd smallest doesn’t matter it is all about being the smallest.
Beyoncé, Born in March 2012, the female Dachshund mix that weighed an ounce was born was so small that she could fit on a spoon. The owners had to bottle feed her, cause her stomache was so small, every hour.( even at night!!!) the officials would not agree she was the smallest because she was not a year old yet.
Milly, a Chihuahua, is older than Beyoncé by only a few months. Bottle fed was small, milly had to be fed with an EYEDROPPER! She was three months old and had only grow THREE inches.
In July, as crazy as it sounds, an even smaller pooch was born. The puppy only weighed 1.58 ounces! if an eye dropper sounded small then the SHRINGE was even smaller. The owner had to feed her every half hr.!!
Those dogs were really tiny, but because they were not yet a yr. old yet the current title holder goes to (drumroll please) … Boo Boo. She is 6 yrs. old, 4 inches tall, and weighs 1.5 lbs. the others may seem smaller, but they are still pups.

I chose to read the article “Why Darth Vader and Mickey Mouse May Soon Become Best of Pals!!” by Meera Dolasia. This article talks about how Disney bought Pixar and Marvel and has now bought Lucas Arts, the maker of Star Wars.
On October 30th Disney bought Lucas Films for 4.05 billion United States dollars, half in cash and half in shares of stock. Disney bought it for the right to restart Star Wars. Disney is now making Star Wars 7 and it will be in theatres in 2015.
Although Disney now owns Lucas Films, it will not be putting Disney characters like Mickey or Minnie in any Star Wars Movies. The founder of Lucas Films has agreed to donate new funds from this to help education.
I chose to read this article because I heard Disney bought Lucas Films and wanted to know more about it. I learned that Disney is going to be making a Star Wars 7.

This article was called The Competition for Title of World’s Smallest Dog Heats up! It was written by Meera Dolasia. This story is about a few dogs that are trying to get in the Guinness World Record Book. One came and then an even smaller one, and then after that an even tinier one!
The first dog’s name was Beyonce, she was born in March 2012. “The female Dachshund mix dog that weighed a mere ounce when born was so tiny that she could fit on a spoon.” “The puppy had to be bottle fed every hour on the hour because she could only take in a little food at time.” Beyonce is not expected to grow any more than 1.5 pounds. The owner sent in the application to try and claim the title for Beyonce. “However, the officials would not consider it until she turned one, the age at which dogs are considered 'fully grown'.”
Another dog, named Milly, came along that was even tinier than Beyonce. Milly was a year, so she was at her full growth. “The Puerto Rican Chihuahua, that is older than Beyonce by a few months, was so tiny when born that she had to be fed with an eyedropper and at three months had only grown three inches tall.”
“In July 2012 along came news of another even tinier pooch from Jarocin, Poland. Weighing just 1.58 ounces.” This puppy had to be fed with a syringe every half hour, day and night. This process would be very tiring. All of the puppies have to compete with the current title holder, a 6 year old Chihuahua, named Boo Boo. Boo Boo weighs 1.5 pounds and is only 4 inches tall.
I chose this article, because the dogs looked cute and it looked interesting. I learned about these very small puppies that are super cute and are trying to get the world record for tiniest puppy. This will help me in the future in case I ever want a really small dog.
